Introduction
The Lake Victoria Region Local Authorities Co-operation (LVRLAC) is a regional network of local authorities along the shore of Lake Victoria. This network aims to work with communities around the lake basin to ensure sustainable use of the lakes resources.
Environmentalists and scientists are in agreement that the water levels of Lake Victoria have gown down as a result of a result of warmer temperatures (Global warming). These warmer temperatures have been linked to environmental degradation on the shores of the lake, which is primarily linked to the loss of forest cover. It is on this background among others that LVRLAC was founded in 1997. It provides a forum for local authorities to discuss and tackle environmental, economic and social issues affecting the lake basin. LVRLAC’s membership totals to 62 Local Authorities spread out in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. New membership is welcome and initial contacts have been made with Rwandese Association of Local Government Authorities to facilitate integration in the East Africa Community.
